In my opinion, JDL got this building right. The proportions, timeless finishes, private terraces, and attention to daily living work beautifully together. Add the location, and you have a building that belongs near the top of any serious conversation about luxury condos in Chicago.
The location is fundamental to the appeal. Walton Street puts you within walking distance of Oak Street shopping, Michigan Avenue, and Oak Street Beach, with plenty to enjoy along the way. This is the version of Gold Coast living people have in mind when they start looking here: a neighborhood you can make part of your daily routine.
The building’s house car and driver extend that convenience beyond walking distance. Having someone take you where you need to go is a meaningful service, particularly when you want to leave the car behind. It reflects the thought that went into the experience of living at No. 9 Walton.
Designed by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture and developed by JDL, No. 9 Walton has an architectural presence that feels at home in the Gold Coast. Inside, the generous proportions and timeless finish selections give the building a lasting appeal. To my eye, the materials and detailing feel as appropriate today as they did when the building opened.
That is difficult to accomplish. Finishes draw plenty of attention during an initial showing, but you live with them long after that first impression. I think the strength here is how comfortably the design holds together, from the common spaces to the homes themselves. There is a consistency to the quality that makes the building feel complete.
The substantial layouts and private terraces are an important part of what makes No. 9 Walton work. There is room to entertain, accommodate the furniture and art you want to keep, and enjoy outdoor space as an extension of the home.
Individual properties still vary considerably. Custom interiors, exposure, room configuration, and terrace dimensions all deserve attention.
